Best buys in the heart of winter (hint: these will work into spring)

Those cold, post-holiday months that make up the very heart of winter require something to look forward to. However, people don’t often think about making new clothing purchases during this timeframe. After all, the gift-giving frenzy of the holidays have come and gone and many of the major purchases that define the season, such as new outerwear, sweaters, or snow pants are often made at the start of the season.

But that viewpoint is missing a crucial element—spring. It’s a misconception that all spring clothing must be lightweight or designed for warm weather. In fact, many of the season’s best pieces can be worn during winter and go straight into spring.

For one example, consider the cashmere sweater. It can be an all-day staple through winter (when its softness will be well appreciated by dry skin), and it can take the place of outerwear on brisk spring nights. You can even wear a cotton sweater around the tail end of winter, and then keep it around for continued spring duty.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that chino pants make an excellent mid-winter purchase. As an essential building block to many casual and professional looks, a pair of women’s chinos can be on-call 12 months out of the year.

Fleece jackets and fleece coats also walk a fine line. During winter’s frostiest stretches, they earn their keep as easy layering pieces. Their lighter weight makes them a convenient option to pull over anything from a shawl collar cardigan to a cozy turtleneck.

When it comes to spring outerwear, there’s one classic piece that always comes to mind: the trench coat. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait until a full thaw to throw yours on. They can be layered over a cozy sweater and paired with a tartan scarf during the winter months for a classic look, and then slide over a tee or a cotton sweater once it starts getting balmy. If you think you’ll be wearing yours frequently in wintertime, consider a lined trench coat on account of the extra warmth it brings.

Of course, all this talk of spring brings us to a piece associated with the season’s less-attractive weather aspect: the raincoat. April showers may bring flowers, but feel free to slip on this classic style anytime winter sends sleet your way.
