Trends come and go, and thankfully the antique accent trend is back for 2020 — but only in moderation. Letting a couple of antique pieces do the work for you is more impactful than making your whole home look just plain “old.” It doesn’t have to be a real antique either, as long as it looks the part. Think romantic, ornate décor. Anything that adds a little antique vibe in your summer living space can give it something unique while also being on-trend.
Use the Pantone Color of the Year
The 2020 Pantone Color of the Year is classic blue, making it pretty much perfect for summer décor. Bring the blue skies and ocean waves inside easily with some classic blue pillows, bedding, or kitchen or bath towels. They don’t have to be solid blue, though, if you just want a touch of the color. Patterns and florals against a white background are in style as well. In addition, you can even paint an accent wall blue for the summer to really embrace the trend.
Brighten Up Your Kitchen
A “bright and airy” kitchen meant all white about 10 years ago, but designers are predicting a change in the trend, leaning more toward natural wood for a bright look that isn’t stark white. However, they are also defying the all-white trend by using brightly colored cabinets. So if you’re really into the Pantone color of the year, you may as well use it as an excuse to paint your kitchen cabinets blue this summer.
Give Your Bed a Makeover
Canopy beds are all the rage these days, perhaps because the Victorian/antique look is in style as well. But they don’t have to be clunky wooden ones with heavy fabric draping over it. The use of metal and acrylic makes for a sleek yet affordable look. Refresh your bedding with new comforters and bed sheets if you’re still using old winter ones. You’d be surprised how much changing the bed frame and bedding can make your room look completely different.
Bring the Outdoors Inside with Wicker and Rattan
Sure, you might associate wicker and rattan with patio furniture, but 2020 is bringing the look indoors for summer. If you’ve ever sat in a wicker rocking chair or loveseat, you can likely still hear the creak of the wood, bringing back warm, nostalgic vibes of summers past. Picture a piece in your living room with a cute throw pillow tossed on it to make it look like it inviting to sit on indoors.
Keep it Cozy
Aside from antiques, there are other ways to make your home welcoming and comfortable this season. Summer of 2020 will embrace a variety of textures that beg to be touched. In addition, placing a bright floral arrangement (even if it’s fake) can brighten up your outdoor patio set. Don’t forget about lighting at nighttime. Place a number of solar lights along the walkway to add an element of beauty and security to the front of your home. In the backyard, some stringed bulbs across the fence or over a pergola will add decorative illumination.
Don’t feel like you have to embrace all of these ideas in order to make your home on-trend this summer, especially if they don’t really match your own personal style. Start with one or two and get inspired as you go. After all, it is your home and it should reflect your style too.
