What to Wear in Hawaii: The Lands’ End Essential Packing Guide

You’ve booked your flight and found the perfect hotel, and it’s time to start packing for your much-anticipated trip to Hawaii! There’s a good reason why this is such a popular destination – between the incredible beaches, breathtaking scenery, and endless opportunities for adventure, visiting Hawaii is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Making sure you have all of the essentials ready and packed is the best way to ensure that you’re totally set for your vacation. These are our must-haves for a trip to Hawaii:

  • Swimsuits
  • A loose dress
  • Shirts
  • Shorts
  • The right footwear
  • Sandals
  • Tennis shoes
  • Hiking shoes
  • A lightweight jacket
  • A hat
  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • A beach bag

Let’s take a more in-depth look at these items, why you need them, and what you should be focusing on when choosing specifics to pack for your trip to paradise.

Swimsuits

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Hawaii? For me, it’s those gorgeous beaches. When vacationing in Hawaii, you’re pretty much guaranteed to clock some hours on the beach, making swimsuits an absolutel essential and easily at the top of our packing list.

For women, we recommend a swimsuit that fits your personal style. From bikinis to tankinis, swim skirts to swim shorts, there are tons of options to choose from. Find one that you love so you can feel comfortable and confident on the beach.

For the guys, a reliable pair of men’s swim trunks will serve you well during your Hawaii beach days. Pair it with a men’s rash guard if you’re planning on any strenuous water adventures!

A Loose Dress

Whether you’re wanting something fun to serve as a swimsuit cover-up or you’re in need of a dressy option for a nice restaurant, a loose and lovely dress will definitely come in handy.

With the warm weather you typically find in Hawaii, we recommend considering summer dresses. They’re designed to help you stay comfortable during those hotter days, making them the perfect option for your island vacation.

Shirts

While this may seem obvious, it goes without saying that just any shirt won’t do for your time in Hawaii. Consider what shirts and tops you should pack that will easily pair with other items in your suitcase, as well as ones that will accommodate the activities on your itinerary.

For women, it’s a good idea to pack some women’s summer shirts and tank tops. Not only will they help you stay cool in the warm weather, but you’ll find that they are versatile options you can easily wear with the bottoms you decide to pack.

For men, consider some simple casual shirts for your trip. Some comfortable men’s T-shirts and maybe a short-sleeve button-up or two for more formal evening activities will do the trick.

Shorts

The perfect bottoms to pair with those comfortable summer tops, some reliable pairs of shorts should make their way into your suitcase. Even in the evenings when things cool down a touch, you’ll find that women’s shorts continue to be a good option for your time in Hawaii.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that if you’re planning on exploring any trails or going on any hikes, it’s wise to wear long pants. If these adventures are on your list of activities, be sure to pack accordingly.

The Right Footwear

The shoes you pack will make a world of difference for your day-to-day experience. We recommend having three main types of footwear: sandals, tennis shoes, and hiking shoes (if you’re planning on hiking). We’ve found that as long as you have these three different kinds of footwear, you’re all set for your Hawaii vacation.

A Lightweight Jacket

While most of our essentials are based on the fact that it’s typically quite warm in Hawaii, we do recommend throwing a lightweight jacket in your suitcase. This is the perfect item to have on-hand during the evenings or if you’re the kind of person that gets cold easily. You’ll be happy to have this! A good women’s lightweight jacket or men’s jacket will serve you well.

Other Essentials

And then, of course, there are a handful of other essentials you don’t want to forget. You’ll want a hat for added sun protection, socks, underwear, and a beach bag to hold all of those beach essentials.

We know that ensuring you have all of the right items packed for your big trip is a priority for you. As you get your bags ready, be sure to keep our essential packing guide in mind to make sure you don’t miss anything! Aloha!
