A Girl’s Guide to Shopping Online for the First Time

Thanks to the internet, the way we do things has changed over the years. We don’t have to set foot in the office to go to work if we aren’t asked to, nor do we have to enter a store to get what we want. Everything we want and need can be delivered to our homes without even interacting with a human being. But when it comes to shopping, it can be a bit unnerving to purchase things online just by the way the picture looks. There is a lot to consider before submitting your card information for payment.

And when shopping for girls who can sometimes be particular about their clothing choices and how clothes feel on them, shopping in-store can sometimes be ideal. But if you find a store that masters the art of online retail and makes it easy to shop for girls’ clothes, it’s certainly worth checking out. If you’re somewhat new to buying girls' clothes online, here are our tips for making the process easy and fun.

Make a List and Try to Stick to It

Once you get onto a website and start clicking on all the items you like, it can be easy to get distracted, forgetting what you were initially looking for to begin with. It can help to have a list to stick to. Write the type of item down on a piece of paper, and jot down the qualities you want from it. For example, if your daughter is looking for a new pair of girls’ pajamas, discuss the type she wants. It could be a nightgown, a simple girls' shirts and shorts combo, or a warm girls' flannel pajama set.

But once she starts seeing other items, she might act on impulse and end up getting the first thing she sees without putting much thought into it. That first pair of PJs she sees might look cute to her, but they might be too warm or too cold for the season. Consider qualities like warmth, fabric, material, color, and price, and keep your notes nearby so you have something to guide you as you browse.

Read Sizing Specifics

Keep in mind when shopping online that although retailers try to be consistent in their sizing, they can be quite different from one brand to another. For example, a size 8 pair of girls' jeans at one retailer might actually fit like a size 6 at another. Reading the sizing guide can help. Some retailers even post notes in a product’s description, like “This item runs small. We recommend sizing up.” And if your daughter likes wearing her clothes somewhat baggy or if she’s between sizes, she might want to size up anyway. Keep that in mind as well.

Rely on Reviews

It can be daunting to spend money on something sight unseen. Sometimes it helps give you a boost of confidence when you read online reviews from other people who purchased the item. This is especially helpful if you’re purchasing something without your daughter with you to give you feedback on it, such as when purchasing something as a surprise or a gift. Sometimes reading something, like “I bought this for my 10-year-old daughter and she absolutely loved it,” can help, especially if you have a daughter in the same age bracket. Additionally, you may be able to rule out the item if the reviews say it didn’t look like it did in the photo or if something is better suited for girls who wear plus sizes or slim sizes.

Check the Labels

While you might not be able to physically check the label itself, you can check to see what the garment is made of by reading the product description online. If your daughter has skin allergies or if certain fabrics feel scratchy on her, be sure to check what it is made of. It might be best to stick with leggings for girls made with super soft cotton, for example, or fleece sweatshirts that feel soft against the skin. Or maybe you’re more worried about washing instructions. If something made for kids has instructions saying they need to be hand-washed, for instance, you might want to opt for something machine-washable and dryable.

Check the Return Policy

When making purchases online, chances are your daughter will love what you buy her as long as you take all the steps mentioned above. But there is still the possibility that it might not work for her when it arrives. Buying something online should be like trying it on at a store; you shouldn’t be penalized for having to return it. As such, be sure to check the return policy to see how much time you’ll have to return the item if it doesn’t work out, as well as whether you have the option to mail it back or drop it off in the store if you choose.

As you can see, there’s no reason to be intimidated by online shopping for girls. In fact, having the ability to try things on in the comfort of your home is a huge bonus. If she doesn’t like it or it doesn’t fit, you can always return it for something she’ll love.
