5 Reason Why I Love my Flannel

5 Reasons Why I Love my Flannel Shirt

Though most associate them with cold weather, flannel shirts are my go-to style all year long. I am a strong supporter of the idea that no wardrobe is complete without one, and, if you live within reach of brutal midwestern winters, you should own at least three. There’s no item of clothing more versatile and useful than a flannel shirt, and that’s a hill I will gladly die on. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love my flannel shirts, and here are five reasons why.

1. Flannel Shirts Aren’t Bulky

If living in Wisconsin has taught me anything, it’s that layers are a Sconnie’s best friend. The weather can change from sunny and warm to bitter cold blizzard in a matter of days; I’ve seen it happen. The best way to combat crazy weather like this is to dress in layers that can be easily taken on and off, and flannel shirts are perfect for this. Not only that, they’re not as bulky as your sweatshirt and pullover options, meaning you’ll feel a lot less restricted if you have to stack on some other layers with your flannel. I especially love my flannel for winter ski trips because I can wear layers under it as well as over.

2. Flannel Shirts are Always a Classic

The term “flannel” originated in Wales during the 1300s, and the fabric hasn’t been out of style since. Flannel shirts are a timeless staple of any wardrobe that has never, and most likely will never, go out of style. Recently, the thing to do with your favorite flannel is to tie it around your waist as an accessory for your favorite women’s leggings and graphic tee. How many other things in your closet can do that? Buying a flannel or two will save you money in the long run because you won’t have to toss them out when the next trend comes along. No matter what is in style right now, you can be sure that flannels will find a place to fit within it.

3. Flannel Shirts are Comfy

There aren’t a lot of options for comfy clothes that can easily be dressed up for a special occasion. Your favorite hoodie, though no doubt the softest thing in your closet, probably won’t cut it at date night. That fancy sweater, on the other hand, is going to get really itchy really fast. The perfect medium? A flannel shirt!

Go for maximum style and comfort with a flannel – black jegging duo. Tucking in the shirt and throwing on a necklace or a few bracelets will transform the look from a cozy weekend at home to a chic, red carpet ready style in no time. You can wear a dark jean or leather jacket over top if you’re looking to add a bit of flair to your look. All eyes will be on you when you go out, and you’ll be able to focus on the festivities instead of adjusting an uncomfortable dress, again and again, all night long.

4. Flannel Shirts are Tough

Buying a flannel shirt is more than just making a purchase, it’s an investment. There’s a reason why farmers and lumberjacks are often seen wearing their trusty flannel, it’s crazy durable! Whether you’re working around the house, hiking through the wilderness, chasing your kids through the park, or taking a lazy day on the couch, you can do it confident that your flannel shirt will be able to stand up to anything you throw at it. In an age of fast fashion, there aren’t many items in your closet that can say the same. They’re a great option if you aren’t sure what kind of outfit a task or outing needs, as there are few things a good, sturdy, flannel can’t handle.

5. Flannel Shirts Look Good on Everyone

It’s one of the few truths we know about our universe. No matter your size, no matter your gender, no matter your aesthetic, you can rock a flannel shirt. Currently, loving a pastel color scheme? There’s a flannel out there with your name on it. Looking to show off some skin this summer? Knot your shirt in the front, roll up the sleeves, and soak in the sun. Feel more comfortable in something a bit looser? You guessed it; a flannel shirt is perfect for you! There are hundreds of ways to style a flannel and tons of different colors and patterns, so why not add one to your rotation of looks?
