Why do I Need Slippers if I Have so Many Socks? | Lands’ End

Why do I need slippers if I have so many socks?

Do you love socks? You probably have multiple pairs of fuzzy, wool, and maybe some tried and true cotton socks. They’re all great. They keep your feet protected as well as warm. They also have the added bonus of preventing your shoes from having to be washed all of the time. If you wear shoes without socks, the insides of your shoes start smelling funky a lot faster than if you’re wearing socks in your shoes. Since socks are so comfy, you might be in the habit of wearing them around your house to stay warm. So, you might be wondering, why do I need a pair of slippers when socks give me everything I need and more? Well, here are a few reasons why you should get a pair of slippers.

The fit of slippers

Slippers are better than socks for so many reasons. Slippers are easier to slip into and slip out of. They are not as constricting as socks can often be. They give your toes the wiggle room they crave, your arches the cushion they long for, and your whole foot the cozy warmth it has waited all day to come home to. In many cases, a pair of slippers will simply be more comfortable than just a pair of plain old socks.

Giving your feet some down time

Most of us look forward to taking the shoes we’ve been wearing all day off when we get home. This is a great habit to get into since sliding out of your shoes and into your slippers is also good for your health. Just like the rest of your body, your feet need to be treated to a little downtime. Most of the shoes we wear during our daily activities can be a bit binding, and by the time you get home your feet need a break.

Slippers make you more productive

Did you know studies show wearing slippers has been proven to make people more productive indoors? When I read this stat I literally went out and bought girls’ slippers and boys’ slippers for all five of my children and men’s slippers for my husband. Seriously though, relaxation increases productivity. You would be hard pressed to find someone in a pair of slippers who is anything other than relaxed. Now I’m not saying slippers will remodel your bathroom, but they may help you get your pantry organized.

They protect your feet

Have you noticed that when you are at the spa, one of the first things they have you slip into is a nice pair of slippers and a robe? They may have you believing that the fresh duds are to help you relax, and I am sure you feel more relaxed with them on, but can I let you in on a little secret? Slippers protect your feet from becoming infected with foot funguses and bacterial infections while you are enjoying the spa (same is true when you wear slippers in your own home). So….ummmm…thank you fancy spa lady. Yes, I will be wearing those slippers.

In addition, slippers with firm soles can offer needed arch support to your feet. For example, if you live in a home that has a lot of hard flooring or there isn’t much padding under your carpet, your feet are going to take a beating. By getting yourself a pair of slippers with good arch support, you’ll be helping to prevent injury or long term damage to your feet, legs, and joints.

Let’s not forget the warmth

One of the biggest reasons you need slippers is that they can keep your tootsies warm. Yes, socks can offer some warmth, but slippers simply offer more. They usually have more insulation and maybe even rubber soles that are thicker. So, they have a big advantage when it comes to keeping your feet warm, over your socks. You could always wear both together, though…

What about socks with slippers?

Remember, socks and slippers go together like peanut butter and jelly. They’re the dream team! When you wear them together, socks will hug your sweet feet while lengthening the life of your slippers. Socks also provide a nice friction barrier. However, socks should not be worn on their own because socks alone cannot provide the same benefits as socks with slippers.

Are you convinced yet? If so, try slipping into a pair of fuzzy shearling fur scuff slippers, or snag your man a pair of monogrammed moccasins. Don’t forget your kids and get them some sherpa fleece slippers. Everyone in your family needs slippers in their lives for comfort, health, and well- being.
