Simply stated, a cocktail dress is a semi-formal dress intended to be worn to late-afternoon or early-evening social gatherings, events, or occasions.
The answer to the transitory space between casual daytime wear and fancy evening wear, the cocktail dress was born. Cocktail attire for women is a wonderful opportunity to get dressed up and feel glamorous in a way we don’t get to every day. Though it may seem as though we have covered all the bases of cocktail dresses, there are still some do's and don’ts surrounding cocktail attire for women.
Do’s
Do wear pants. While we don’t recommend wearing jeans, wearing a tailored pantsuit, a jumpsuit, or appropriately styled dress pants can be a fabulous outfit choice for a cocktail party. Do get your dress cleaned or steamed before the event. A crumpled or wrinkly dress can wreck even the most stunning dress. Especially if your dress is silk, get it cleaned or steamed beforehand. Do wear a stick-on or strapless bra and seamless panties. Keeping your undergarments subtle is highly recommended for cocktail attire. Do find a way to express your personal style, even when adhering to cocktail attire unwritten rules.
Don’ts
As just mentioned, try not to let your undergarment peek out from underneath your dress. Don’t bring a chunky bag, but instead bring a clutch or small purse. Don’t wear short dresses or floor-length gowns, but instead find the perfect mid-length between above the knees and the mid-calf. Don’t show too much cleavage—your neckline should not be distracting from your outfit. Don’t wear flip-flops or street shoes, but instead enjoy the opportunity to wear something a little fancier. Don’t wear women’s jeans, but instead explore wearing a jumpsuit or pants suit. And most important of all, no matter what you wear, don’t forget to have fun.
