Ways to Relax at Home

Ways to Relax at Home

After a long day at work, at school, or parenting, everybody needs some R&R. Since every household is different, it may be easy for one person to find time to relax but difficult for another. However, no matter your situation or stage in life, it’s important to squeeze in some “me time.” So, grab some comfy clothes and get ready for some recharging time at home. With these ideas, you can create some rejuvenating moments that will improve the enjoyment of your home.

Create a Hobby Corner

Indulging in hobbies is refreshing when you spend most of your day taking care of the needs of others. Whether you’re constantly meeting deadlines at work or being diligent about potty training a toddler, everyone needs time to get in touch with themselves. When you have a dedicated area for your hobbies, it’s easier to access all the necessary items and save time. Here are some items you can set up for an easy transition to free time.

  • Reading Corner: Set up a spot with a reading chair, lamp, fleece throw, and bookshelf for a quiet reading nook. If you prefer ebooks, keep your reader and charger nearby (and make sure the electrical outlet is in easy reach) so that you’re always ready to indulge in your latest novel.
  • Arts and Crafts: Move a desk with storage for art supplies into a spot where you won't be disturbed. Space permitting, add a few storage baskets for additional supplies. Let your creativity flow and make some wonderful things!
  • Super Entertainment Center: If you find TV shows to be the best recharge, set up a spot with a cozy chair and TV where you can stream all your favorite shows. Dress up some extra space in a spare room or basement with a snack station, microwave for popcorn, and even a personalized pillow or two to claim the space as your own.
  • Exercise Room: Sometimes, there’s nothing like sweat therapy to reset your mood. You don’t need a lot of items to create a workout haven. Invest in a set of weights, a floor mat, and some activewear, such as athletic shorts and moisture-wicking tops, and keep them in one spot in your home. You can then retreat to do your favorite workouts with ease.
  • Spa Time: Skincare and pampering may be your best way to feel at ease. Thankfully, it’s easy to find time for a spa hour when you keep your skincare and mani/pedi essentials in one storage container. When it’s time to take care of yourself, bring out your beauty items, and celebrate self-care!

For Parents

When you’re in the thick of parenting at home with kids of all ages, you may feel like your home is like your office, given the constant interruptions. But with a few tricks, you can get some satisfying relaxation time at home. First, because it’s hard to be alone when you’re caring for small children, create relaxing moments while your kids are awake. This can include putting your child in a jogging stroller and going for a walk or run around the neighborhood, or scheduling a combined coffee break playdate with other friends and their children.

At-home workout videos for parents and kids help the whole family stay healthy while bonding too. Also, take advantage of what time you do have alone. This may be nap time for parents of younger kids or school hours for parents of older kids. While your kids are around, they are certainly your priority, and it’s hard to truly empty your mind; however, you can still take 5 minutes in small spurts to focus on yourself. The chores will always be there—so chip away at them after you take care of yourself.

Prioritize Your Time

Even if you have just an hour blocked off to relax, you can do a lot. Refuse to do any housework or any work-from-home tasks during your special hour. Then, after creating this mental space, plan something fun for yourself.

Let the cares of the day melt away, and assure yourself that spending one hour for self-care won’t make the world crumble around you. If it helps, set an alarm so you know that tasks related to helping others are off your plate within this set period. Turn your phone on "do not disturb" mode and focus on your needs alone.

You’ll be amazed at what just an hour of just “you time” can do for your overall mood. It recharges you to take on the day with more zest for life. Stay comfortable during your special time and wear what you want, too. For instance, getting out of work clothes and putting on a pair of cozy sweatpants can catapult you into a different mindset. Wearing casual, comfortable clothing has a calming effect and helps you get in the mood for a relaxing time.

By creating a space and time to take care of yourself, you can relax at home in various ways. Don't forget to prioritize yourself by wearing cozy clothes, too!
