The spring trend reports are out—it’s time to start looking toward wardrobe updates to keep up with the season change. Spring is a time when colorful clothes are in. If anything, they go with the blooming flowers and budding trees. There are designated colors that are already known to be “in” this spring, so get ready to go shopping for clothes in trendy spring colors.
Here are the trendiest colors to wear this spring.
Every year, Pantone — a company that “provides a universal language of color that enables color-critical decisions through every stage of the workflow for brands and manufacturers" — releases a color of the year. According to Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, this color “reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.” The color selected always leads the year’s trends—it pops up in clothing, home decor, and branding throughout the world.
By adding some pops of the 2022 Pantone color of the year to your spring wardrobe, you’ll feel instantly trendy. This year’s color is “very peri”, a “red violet infused blue hue” that is a version of periwinkle. The pastel nature of this hue lends itself well to spring fashion trends. You can shop for cardigans in the shade or go all-out by selecting a very peri-inspired maxi dress. No matter what you choose, you can’t go wrong by leaning into the 2022 color of the year this spring season.
Color expert Pantone also released a spring color trend report after New York Fashion Week. In that trend report, many bright colors took center stage, which, according to Pantone experts reflect our, “free-spirited optimism, and a feeling of new liberation, are unleashed in dynamic, stand-out shades, quenching our desire for spontaneity, uplift, and joy.” One color that was seen on the fashion week runways was daffodil—also known as bright yellow.
The bright color of daffodils is naturally reflective of spring: the flowers bloom during the early part of the season. While wearing yellow can feel daring, it doesn’t have to be. A yellow midi skirt worn with a tucked-in white t-shirt and a pair of white fashion sneakers is an easy, fun outfit that also includes two wardrobe staples—a white tee and sneakers.
If you’re not ready to go all-out with yellow, opt for some fashion choices that include pops of yellow, like floral women’s summer shirts or a midi-length dress with yellow details.
In Pantone’s spring color trend report, numerous shades of blue appeared, including pastel blue called spun sugar, a teal called harbor lake, and a light navy blue called skydiver. You probably already have many blue pieces of clothing in your wardrobe, from women’s v-neck t-shirts to tried-and-true chambray shirts, that you can easily break out for your trendy spring outfit. Hey, even blue jeans count.
The trend report also included two shades of pink that are in for spring 2022. Both a powdery pink called gossamer pink and a mix between magenta and hot pink called innuendo made their way onto the spring runways. Pink is always a fun color to wear and is sure to put a smile on your face, your family’s face, and even on the faces of those you pass by during your weekend errands. Women’s bermuda shorts come in a range of colors, including happy shades of pink that look great when worn on a warm spring day. You can wear a button-up white shirt tucked into your pink bermuda shorts with a baseball hat and canvas tote bag for a day of golf with your partner, or slip on a magenta dress for date night. Pink can be worn day or night and is easy to dress up or dress down.
If you’re looking for something a little more understated, the trendy powdery pink may be more your speed. Powdery pink clothing can normally be swapped in for your white clothes. Try a powdery pink button-down instead of a white one to easily add the spring trend to your look.
Black is one of those timeless colors that fits every season and every era. If you find yourself struggling to find something to wear this spring, go for a little black dress, which, according to The New York Times’ is an "icon of fashion history and a wardrobe essential for anyone.” In the spring months, you can easily add pops of color to your little black dress with the addition of a floral headband, a bright belt, or that very peri-inspired cardigan that’s now in your spring wardrobe.
After a long winter, spring is a time for trying new things. Wear some of these trendy colors with your everyday outfits to add a pop of color or an unexpected vibe to your normal look.
