Supima Cotton: The World’s Best Cotton

Supima® Cotton: The World's Best Cotton

If we were to ask you which country you would go to if you were looking for the best quality cotton, would you be shocked if it were in the US? Known as Supima cotton, roughly 900 farmers are producing the finest cotton in not only the United States, but the world.

When you're shopping online it can often be difficult to gauge whether one piece of clothing is going to be as comfortable as the pictures and descriptions claim them to be. However, when you're purchasing cotton shirts, cotton turtlenecks, Supima sweaters and other Supima products at Lands' End, you're not just buying a great piece of clothing, you're investing in something that will last you for many years to come.

What is Supima Cotton?

Supima® cotton is the name for American-grown superior pima cotton, prized for its strength, softness and ability to hold color longer. It represents less than 1% of the cotton grown in the world. Supima cotton is grown only in California, Arizona, Texas and a small area of New Mexico.

What makes Supima cotton a superior choice?

  1. Supima is stronger. It boasts twice the strength as regular cotton. That means it's difficult to tear, does not pill quickly, and maintains its softness.
  2. Its extra-long staple is stronger and is built to last against regular cotton. The longer the fiber, the better it is. For example, regular cotton is about an inch long, whereas Supima is on average 1.5 inches long.
  3. Due to its length the cotton fiber absorbs dyes better. You'll be wearing clothes that stay vibrant longer and feel new after each wash.
  4. Since Supima is less likely to pill and tear, your garments will get softer the more you wear it.
  5. Supima is grown in California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico.

Grown in America: A History of Supima Cotton

In 1916, pima cotton was first commercially produced in Arizona. Due to its unique extra-long staple fiber, the strength and lightweight nature of Pima became highly sought after. Pima farmers in the Southwest joined together to form Supima in 1954. This would ensure that the coveted Pima cotton quality remained true to its message, and true to its American heritage. As it grew its reputation as a reliable supplier of luxury cotton, Supima cotton has become an indicator to a company's highest quality products.
