If you've ever thought about putting together a men's plus size capsule wardrobe for winter, you're not alone. Capsule wardrobes are popular because they're an easy way to feel comfortable and look great. Let’s look at some capsule wardrobe tips.
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of go-to garments that work together. Having a capsule wardrobe makes it easy to put together outfits for any occasion. They're often smaller wardrobes, which gives you the ability to invest in high-quality pieces that you know you'll wear for years to come. A capsule wardrobe can upgrade your look, ensure that you have comfy clothes every day, save you from decision fatigue, and even save you money.
Starting a capsule wardrobe can be as easy as you want it to be. Go through your closet and dresser and pick out the clothes that you know you'll want to wear this winter. Do you have a favorite pair of men’s big and tall jeans? As long as they fit and make you feel good when you wear them, put them in your “capsule pile”. Once you collect all of your favorites, give them a once over. Do they work together to mix and match or are there some outliers who need a mate? Do you have a range of clothes that will work well for all of the activities in your lifestyle? Jot down a few notes. These will be handy when you look at adding pieces.
Every guy needs at least one great pair of jeans and one pair of dark neutral-colored dress pants. How many other pairs of men’s big and tall pants you will need depends on your lifestyle. Do you work in an office or work from home? Do you dress up once a season or more often than once a week? Are there sports or outdoor activities that you love? How often do you like to do laundry or go to the dry cleaners? Most guys find four to five pairs of pants that will work for winter is a good number, but this is a matter of personal choice.
When in doubt, stick to dark-colored neutral pants. This will allow for maximum mixing and matching while also keeping your outfits looking sharp. Darker colors look “heavier”, so we naturally want to see lighter colors on top and darker colors on the bottom.
When it comes to shirts, every guy needs a classic white big and tall T-shirt in his wardrobe. Whether you wear it alone with jeans or wear it under a flannel shirt or sweater, it’s a great wardrobe staple. For winter, you'll also want to have a couple of casual long-sleeved shirts, a couple of sweaters, and at least one white dress shirt. Most guys find six to eight shirts is a good number, but once again, this depends on your lifestyle and laundry preferences.
A good rule is to have the majority of shirts in your wardrobe be neutral colors. Stick to a couple of neutral colors like white and grey, and then add a couple of colors like that blue that makes you look so handsome or a favorite red for the holidays.
Think of workout wear as a separate category in your capsule wardrobe. Do you wear men’s workout clothes just for working out or are they your go-to weekend wear or home office wear, too? Sticking with neutral shorts or joggers and mostly neutral tops and jackets will give you more options for mixing and matching.
Unless you live in the tropics, don’t forget outerwear for your winter capsule wardrobe. At a minimum, plan for a fleece jacket, a big and tall winter coat, gloves, and a hat. Even if you have all of these garments in your closet already, double-check that they fit, don’t need any repairs, and are clean and ready to go. If you like winter sports, playing in the snow with the kids, or clear snow, make sure to add a great pair of snow boots and perhaps snow pants to your outerwear.
Once you've identified what capsule pieces you already have and what you might like to add, try on some different outfits from your current pieces. You might be surprised to find that a big and tall men’s sweater looks great with both jeans and dress pants. This means that dressing it up with a white dress shirt underneath and dress shoes might make a good business casual or holiday casual outfit. Likewise, by pairing it with your jeans and favorite tennis shoes, you can get more mileage out of it for casual wear.
The more you can mix and match, the more you can grab, go, and know that you'll look and feel great. Have fun experimenting with your men’s plus size winter capsule wardrobe!
