Here at Lands’ End, we are on a mission to produce exceptional products, with sustainability being at the forefront of our minds. We are intentionally collaborating to develop key strategies to improve our brand's performance and serve as a leading example of what sustainability looks like for other apparel brands. So whether you have a favorite cotton cardigan or your go-to khaki skirts, you can wear with confidence that your clothing has been ethically made.
We are dedicated to researching and actively pursuing innovative technologies to deliver quality products that our loyal customers desire while being friendly to the environment. We take ownership of our sustainability blueprint to provide quality, sustainable products to our customers.
As we uphold our commitments to sustainability within our company, we understand the importance of partnerships and trusted stakeholder groups, including the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, National Forest Foundation (NFF), Clean Lakes Alliance, Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council, Martex Fiber, and the Driftless Area Land Conservancy. With these significant partnerships, we can obtain the knowledge and power to create considerable change beyond our brand to move our eco-friendly fashion agenda forward.
Here at Lands’ End, we understand that to maintain sustainability within our brand, it starts with our commitment to being environmentally conscious. We continue to be committed to our customers by always being transparent, honest, and authentic. We proudly share where our products are made and what materials we use so that you can be 100% informed about each garment you select.
Below are five essential efforts underway at Lands’ End to be more sustainable.
We plan to use cotton from a sustainable source by 2025. Cotton is used to make a large portion of products for Lands’ End. From cotton button-downs to our comfortable cotton dresses for women, that’s why we strive to make cotton production better for Lands’ End and the future of the industry as a whole.
We plan to produce 30% of products made with water-saving finishing processes. We are committed to working with the suppliers that make our products, like our staple men’s and women’s polo shirts, save a billion liters of water by 2022. Apparel manufacturing uses billions of liters of water, which means we can drastically change our process to conserve water.
We plan to create 100% of polyester fibers from a recycled source. Recycled polyester gives new life to a material that’s not biodegradable and would otherwise end up in a landfill or the ocean. Also, recycled polyester can reduce the extraction of crude oil and natural gas from the Earth to make more plastic.
We understand that the product life cycle impacts more than just sourcing materials, manufacturing processes, logistics, and materials. The “usage” phase and the impact of the product being discarded at the end of its life must also be considered and taken into account.
By 2025, we plan to use 100% recyclable, reusable, or industrially compostable packaging for our brand labels. Additionally, we are taking action to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-use toward reuse models where relevant.
In our continued efforts to educate, motivate, and inspire our customers and the world around us to take care of the planet every day, we continue to promote sustainability engagement on our social media platforms using the hashtag #IAmLandsFriendly. We will share current sustainability facts and encourage our followers to discuss how they celebrate Earth Day and how they are doing their part year-round to protect our planet and its natural resources. Here at Lands’ End, we remain committed to pursuing green initiatives that will allow us to deliver great products that you love—from our trusted packable jackets to our best kids’ raincoats—so that you can look good and feel comfortable, all. At the same time, we maintain ethical practices and reduce the negative impact on the planet.
We are excited for the clear direction we have established and equally happy with our sustainability approach throughout the production life cycle, examining the materials they source, the products we design, and the suppliers we do business with. We take ownership of our sustainability journey and use our established brand to communicate authentically with you, our valued customers, and the importance and impact of producing responsibly.
