5 Easy Outfits for a Backyard BBQ

Backyard barbecues are summer event staples. Is it even summer if you don't have at least a few of these to go to? Hardly. Someone has a grill and a big enough yard. Another party will bring meat, veggies, chips, and dip. Another guest will probably drag a cooler out of the back of a truck. And another person will let everybody know when and where to turn up, and it will be on!

As for what to wear to this classic American occasion, you have some options. Backyard barbecues, while technically casual events, can support quite the range of outfits. It depends a little on the group that is grillin' and how much time you have to spare. Here are five easy outfits for that last-minute invite to a backyard barbecue.

Jeans and a T-shirt

If this is your old neighborhood playmates getting together with their families who are so close, everyone might as well be related. No one will mind too much if you show up in cut-off jeans shorts and a fitted v-neck T-shirt or a loose tank top to stay cool in the heat. If your shirt has a dark graphic, this can serve as a bib to conceal stains. Additionally, jeans, especially a dark wash, will also keep any accidental drips from showing. You can dress things up a little bit by adding a Panama hat and a chunky necklace or some bracelets. Dark converse sneakers or cute sandals would be great complements for this outfit.

Shorts and Sleeveless Blouse

This is another minimally covering outfit, but it's a step up from cut-off jeans. Stay cool in a pair of loose linen shorts or white jean shorts with a pair of strappy sandals and a nice blowsy women's blouse. Pick a top in a nice color like salmon or mint, or opt for something in a black-and-white or red-and-white checked pattern to recall a picnic atmosphere. Whatever color combination you choose, the loose cuts, light materials, and minimal coverage should help keep air and heat moving right along. You do need to pay a bit more attention to this outfit since its colors are probably on the lighter side. This is for the Greek kabob kind of barbecue if you know what we mean. Stick with tzatziki sauce instead of the barbecue sauce.

Jumper Style

There are some gorgeous jumpers out there. Single pieces ending in cute shorts made of floral patterned materials just seem made for summertime fun. Plus, they're easy to throw on. Tube top and off-the-shoulder jumpers can help you work on your tan lines while munching and laughing in the sun. Alternatively, if you prefer a farmcore vibe, go with short overalls made of denim with a white top underneath. These jumper options should expose enough of you to the wind, all the while keeping you stylish. Sandals still make for great footwear, or you could go with cowgirl boots, especially if some dancing breaks out after a while.

Summer Dress

Moving up to the next level of formality, summer dresses make classic outfits for any summer occasion. Typically made of light cotton, these dresses are as breezy as skirts can be, and since they are dresses, you don't have to worry too much about matching them with anything. Look for your perfect summer dress in a cheery yellow or blush pink. If you prefer prints, florals make stunning summer dresses, whether you're the kind who likes big bursting blooms or delicate buds running up and down the fabric's folds. If you're searching for good dress cuts, the wrap dress is an excellent one as well as one of the few styles that are truly universally flattering. This type of fit-and-flare dress will definitely be a hit at any barbecue event this summer. Pair it with sandals or wedges, and you're good to go!

Maxi Dress and Jean Jacket

Because of its elegant length, the maxi dress takes the place of the most sophisticated barbecue outfit. While some can verge on evening gowns, many maxis can be simple, made of cotton, and perfect for lounging about on a summer day. Long, layer necklaces are great for these dresses. Think music festival-style jewelry if you need to dress down a little. If you need a little more help keeping it casual, a jean jacket could be good to grab on your way out the door. Finish the look with flats or sandals, and don't forget a cute pair of sunglasses as you leave for your backyard barbecue.

Each of these outfits is simple and easy while still looking stylish and put together. Find which combination works for you and have a fabulous time grilling some delicious food and making some beautiful memories.
