St. Patrick’s Day is one of our country’s favorite holidays. And it’s no wonder. Wearing green clothes, drinking green beer, enjoying Irish food, and attempting Irish dancing are all fun and special ways to enjoy a celebratory spring day.
But if boisterous bars, crowded restaurants, and jam-packed parades aren’t on your schedule this year, we get it. You don’t need huge crowds to make a holiday memorable and fun. Here are some great ways to celebrate a more subdued St. Patrick’s Day at home with friends and family.
The way to get everyone in the mood for a fun bash is to make sure people are dressed properly for the celebration—we’re talking green hats, green shirts, green winter scarves—you get the idea! Remind any guests or family members that a green piece of clothing or a green accessory is required for your get-together. One suggestion? Buy some green stickers or green beads that your kids can hand out to anyone who didn’t follow the attire rules. This will also keep the kids happy and busy.
To set the mood, turn on some Irish music, watch a parade on television, set out some green appetizers and cookies, and hang green streamers around the house. Décor can make or break a St. Patrick’s Day bash. It’s the one day of the year when you can’t have too much green.
To get the celebration started, remind dad to don his favorite green men’s sweater. A turtleneck, crew neck, v-neck, or cardigan style are all fun options for his holiday sweater. There are even hilarious themed sweaters that will let him show off his funny personality.
He can also pair it with some men’s khaki pants, which are sure to be a smart option when he starts leading the family in an Irish dance battle. There are options with elastic waists, which make it more comfortable to feast on corned beef hash and green beer throughout the day and to dance the evening away. Some styles even have non-functional buttons and a zipper fly to give the look of regular chinos.
Speaking of dancing, mom should throw on a green top and her most comfortable women’s joggers to really get the party started. Joggers are cozy, cute, and flattering on almost every body type. Moms love them because they are super comfy, but they also can look very chic if paired with the right top. A cute turtleneck or nice flannel would work great with joggers and sneakers on St. Patrick's Day.
Even better? Joggers are easy to wash, so mom probably won’t care if the joggers get a little messy as she and dad are cooking up a storm for the at-home celebration. By the way, if you need ideas for what to cook and serve during your celebration, traditional Irish dishes like corned beef and cabbage, shepherd's pie, and Irish soda bread are interesting foods that all your guests will probably enjoy trying. For a little extra family bonding, the whole crew can cook together before the celebration. While mom and dad make the shepherd's pie, the kids will have a blast making green cookies, cupcakes, and even green Rice Krispies Treats—all dyed with green food coloring.
While kids might like the Irish dancing and the traditional Irish grub, crafts and art projects are great for keeping the younger set busy and happy. So why not set up a St. Patrick’s Day art area in your house? Find green markers, green paints, and even green poster boards to get them started. If you’re super daring, you can let them make slime or their own Play-Doh.
And if you’re inviting friends over this year, suggest that their little ones come in kids' t-shirts that can get a little messy so that they can also get in on all the fun. For fuller coverage, order some green smocks for any guests. With the stickers, beads, art projects, and yummy food, most kids will be entertained all day long.
And, don’t forget about your dog! Look for some green dog treats at the local supermarket—and get Fido dressed to celebrate with the rest of the family. Fun dog hoodies are festive and will get your furry four-legged family member in on the family fun. Plus, it'll make for a super cute holiday Instagram snap.
St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays that can be celebrated anywhere. Staying home can be just as fun as heading out with the crowds. So spend a low-key day in and around the house, dancing, eating, drinking, and coloring to your heart's content. Cheers to everyone!
