There are many advantages to working from home. You can set your own schedule, work at your own pace, and develop a system that’s best for you. But it’s important to be mindful of the pitfalls of the work-from-home life, too. Distractions abound, and it’s all too easy to become sidetracked by a phone call, a visitor, a message on social media, something on television, or anything else that happens to trip your radar during the workday.

Even if you have an optimal work setup established, complete with a clean desk, a comfortable chair, a personalized pillow for all-day comfort, and a snack and beverage by your side, odds are you may find your attention is diverted from time to time. What’s the solution? Here’s how to have more energy at work when work happens to be in your own living room.

Get Ready Every Day

Although it may seem perfectly practical to wear pajamas — you are at home, after all — it’s generally more conducive to greater productivity and energy to get properly dressed for the workday. That doesn’t mean you have to wear a sheath dress and a pair of pumps, of course. One of the greatest advantages of working from home is the ability to wear comfortable clothing all day long.

But you should still get ready with some intention in the morning. Treat it as a regular workday, because that’s exactly what it is — the only difference is that you aren’t physically in an office. A few different types of women’s work from home clothes can make life much simpler when you’re cooped up inside but don’t want to wear pajamas all day long. A few basics, like soft blouses that aren’t too dressy, lightweight cardigans and pullover sweaters, and leggings or flowing pants, can make it easy for you to create stylish outfits every day of the week. You’ll feel more polished, especially if you have any video calls on the schedule.

Create a To-Do List

It sounds almost too rigid to believe, but it’s really helpful to create a to-do list when you work from home. Doing that is an almost surefire way to complete everything that you need to do. The advantage of doing this is that it forces you to prioritize tasks. You know precisely what’s due and when, and you know what’s most important and why. You only have so much energy to give, so you should acknowledge that you can only do so much during the course of the day and put your all into doing what’s absolutely necessary.

Making a daily list is an easy way to commit to that kind of professional mindset. You can write it out the night before or do it first thing when you sit down at your desk. The idea is to separate your tasks into bite-size responsibilities that are easier to cross off the list. If you try to spread yourself too thin, especially early in the day, you’ll end up worn out and exhausted before you’ve even had a chance to grab your laptop from your tech bag.  

Give Yourself Breaks

That productive streak you’ve got going is likely to fizzle if you don’t allow yourself time to relax and unwind. Working nonstop from morning to evening can be draining, and it can make it difficult to complete tasks that you would otherwise tackle with total ease. Why put that kind of mental strain on yourself? Instead of falling prey to stress and overwhelm, schedule regular breaks throughout the day.

This isn’t just so that you stay refreshed and alert. It’s also to give your brain time to recover from the hours of work you just put into your job. You can’t make reasoned decisions and prioritize smart use of your time when you’re exhausted, hungry, and craving a little bit of sunshine. So make the most of your me-time. Pull on a pair of women’s lounge pants, throw on a comfortable shirt, and head outside. Go for a walk or just sit on the porch and eat your lunch or sip some tea or coffee. Try to decompress — don’t think about work at this moment. It will be there when you get back!

Prioritize Some Exercise

You don’t have to work out every single day, but carving out some time to squeeze in some exercise can have a huge impact on your energy levels and drive. If you worry about taking too much time out during the day, consider making your exercise session a part of your morning routine instead.

Getting the blood flowing is a great way to feel more alert, especially if you tend to get a little bit sluggish as the day wears on. If mornings don’t work for you, pull on your comfy women’s shorts and a moisture-wicking T-shirt a little bit after lunch. You’ll feel great and ready to handle everything else that’s on your list with ease.
