Back-to-School Outfits for College Students

It’s hard to believe that the back-to-school season is already upon us, but, students are back at their desk chairs and pools and beaches are starting to empty until next year. For college students, back-to-school shopping generally centers around comfort—comfortable outfits that can be worn on study days, in lecture halls and on coffee dates with friends. Depending on the agenda for the day, college students need outfit variety along with comfort, and we’re here to help with outfit ideas.

Oversized Button-Ups and Jeans

According to The Everygirl, oversized button-up tops are set to be all the rage this fall, which makes them a great option for students looking to jump on the latest trends. Get yourself an oversized button-up top to wear over a neutral-colored t-shirt or women’s cotton tank top. Next, wear this top tucked into a pair of high-rise jeans and a pair of short, leather boots for a look that can easily take you from class to a dinner date.

Maxi Skirt and Cute Top

Maxi skirts are back for fall. The Everygirl article notes that “hems are taking a much longer turn for fall. Long, draping maxi skirts in all shapes and sizes are the perfect juxtaposition to the ultra-minis of late.” Conveniently for college students, maxi skirts are also a comfortable and easy item to throw on before heading out to class, too. Simply get yourself a maxi skirt in a color or print that fits in with the other items in your closet and you’ll be nearly all set to rock this fall trend.

On chilly days, tuck a long-sleeved shirt into your maxi dress for a bundled fall look, and on warmer fall days, wear the skirt with a fitted T-shirt in a complementary color. For shoes, you can dress up the outfit with a pair of chunky heeled booties or keep it casual with a pair of slip-on clogs (which, The Everygirl says is another huge trend for the season).

T-Shirt Dress

Timeless T-shirt dresses are not only a casual outfit ideal for a Saturday study session but are also easy to throw on when you’re running out the door. For the new school year, you can wear a T-shirt dress with a denim jacket or hip-length cardigan—this way, you’ll stay warm as you wear this classic dress. For shoes, fashion sneakers are a great option because of their casual nature.

You can even throw on a blanket scarf or a baseball hat to add your own spin to this look.

Tunic and Leggings

Sitting in class all day or hunkering down for an evening study session requires comfort, so leggings are an excellent choice for college students looking to be cute and comfy. You can get yourself a pair of classic black leggings, or, if you’re looking to up the ante, you can get a cute pair of jeggings or some corduroy leggings.

Once you have a pair of leggings picked out, get yourself a bum-covering top to wear them with. Long tunics are a great option, and so are button-up long flannels or chambray shirts (which are also ideal for fall!).

Classically Preppy Outfits

There are few times when a classically preppy outfit fits the bill, but one of those times is certainly during college. A classic women’s cardigan sweater, a pastel polo shirt, a plaid blazer or argyle sweater are great for that tough lecture class you have on your schedule this fall. Pair them with some jeans for an easy look, or something even more classically preppy, go with khakis.

Your new, preppy look may even motivate you to hit the books and study a little harder!

Show Some School Pride

When you need an easy outfit for a day full of classes, turn to women’s T-shirts and sweatshirts that show your school pride. You can purchase tops in your school colors or get a cozy hooded sweatshirt with your school’s name printed across the front. Once you have a shirt you want to wear, pair it with some jeans or leggings and a pair of slip-on sandals or sneakers.

You don’t have to spend a ton of money to have cute back-to-school outfits for your new college semester. Instead, you can purchase items that you know you’ll wear all year round and are versatile enough for class, study group, date night or the college football game.
