6 Things to Pack for Your Weekend Getaway

6 Things to Pack for Your Weekend Getaway

Preparing for a weekend getaway is fun and exciting. Be sure to keep your trip on track and going smoothly by packing essential items. Having everything you need in your bag will help make sure your weekend getaway is relaxing, stress-free, and fabulous.

1. Clothing Essentials

Clothing is a top priority for your weekend trip. The specific clothing you’ll need will depend on what activities are planned and the location you are going to. A skiing trip in the mountains will require a different set of clothing than a spa retreat in a warm location, for example. In general, it’s a good idea to pack:

It’s also a good idea to pack one extra complete versatile outfit to be used for different occasions. That way if you have a spill or accident, you have an option that could work without having to take items to the dry cleaner’s or laundering them while on your weekend getaway.

2. Toiletries Are a Necessity

You’ll need to make sure you have a good toiletry bag to keep all your personal items organized. Pack any necessary toiletries, including:

  • Deodorant/antiperspirant
  • Shampoo, soap, and conditioner
  • Facial wash and facial lotion or cream
  • Toothbrush, mouthwash, and floss
  • Razors/shaving cream
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Hair products and accessories, if needed
  • Makeup
  • Lip balm
  • Lotion and/or sunscreen
  • Nail file or polish, if needed
  • Perfume/cologne/aftershave

3. Tech Items for Your Weekend Getaway

Let’s face it–our lives revolve around technology. Chances are, your tech devices will come in handy on your weekend trip. Whether it’s to communicate with Fido’s dog sitter or to read reviews on the posh restaurant you want to try out on your getaway. The exception to this would be if you are going on an unplugged getaway, remote resort, or another weekend trip that separates you from your devices to get away from the modern world. If you are going on a standard weekend trip that doesn’t require going unplugged, make sure you have your mobile phone, tablet/e-reader, and/or notebook computer. Proper cases and bags will help keep all your tech protected. Make sure devices are fully charged, and pack chargers in one location so they are all together.

4. Luxury and Relaxation Items

Chances are that your weekend getaway is for you to relax, unwind, and recharge. You can pack a few luxury or relaxation items that won’t take up much room in your bag but will let you indulge in a restful, relaxing mini vacay.

  • Bath salts, bath bombs, or bubble bath
  • Scented body lotion or oil
  • Relaxing candles (if your hotel doesn’t allow actual candles, consider LED versions)
  • Essential oils and diffuser
  • Stress-relieving pillow or room spray
  • Exfoliating face and/or body wash
  • Facial mask or peel
  • Heating pad or hot water bottle
  • Mini back or foot massager
  • Favorite indulgent snacks, like dark chocolate or chocolate-covered cherries
  • Books, magazines, or e-reader
  • Cozy slippers
  • Soft flannel robe or loungewear

5. Practical Necessaries

There are a few things you may not think of right away that could come in handy on your trip:

  • Small bag for dirty laundry
  • Small plastic bags to gather up trash from vehicles or hotel rooms
  • Travel pillow and small blanket for the airline or car
  • Ziploc or plastic bags for damp or extra items
  • Coins for vending machines or coin-op laundry
  • Cash for tipping service people
  • Physical map if you are out of a cell phone service area
  • Basic medications, such as acetaminophen or antacids
  • Simple first aid kit with bandages and mini wound cleaner

6. Optional Weekend Getaway Items

Remember to consider the area you are visiting and your planned itinerary and activities to make sure you pack any additional or optional items needed. Some ideas for extra items that may come in handy include:

  • Hand sanitizer spray, gel, or wipes
  • Packable men’s or women’s rain jackets
  • Packable down coat
  • Mini umbrella for sudden rain
  • Sunglasses
  • Personalized beach towel for the pool or working out
  • Camera or video camera
  • Small diary or notebook to jot down impressions, ideas, or thoughts, or to track your daily plans
  • Breath mints or chewing gum
  • Playing cards or travel games
  • Small cooler bag for snacks and drinks
  • Sun hat, cap, or visor
  • Spare travel bag or tote to bring back souvenirs or other items you’ve purchased

Be Prepared for a Stress-Free Weekend Getaway

No matter where you are going, packing well for your getaway is part of the preparation that will ease your mind. Remember that in most cases, if you’ve forgotten it, you can either purchase it near your destination if you really need it or just go without–and you’ll still have a fabulous time.
