If you’re a self-certified beach bum, you know that going to the beach isn’t just about splashing around in the water or laying in the sand catching some rays. Depending on where your favorite beach is, or where your favorite bucket-list beaches are, there may be picnic areas, concessions, games, shopping, or simply walking along the boardwalk — and you’re going to want to be covered up a bit. Even if it is just for the walk to and from the car, there are plenty of ways you can ensure you stay stylish and comfortable without over packing too many clothing items in your beach bag. As such, here are five outfits that will take you from the beach to the boardwalk in style.
If you want to pack light and just wear one piece of clothing, a high-quality flattering swim dress is all you really need. There are so many patterns and styles to choose from—whether you’re looking for a solid color with an A-line shape that flares out like an actual dress, or whether you want a sporty cut in polka dots. No matter what style you choose, make sure you look for certain qualities such as adjustable straps and UPF 50 sun protection. All you need to take it from the beach to the boardwalk is a cute pair of sandals or flip flops.
If you want to take in the sights while still catching some rays on your upper half, some versatile swim bottoms might be all you need. For example, some swim shorts can provide as much coverage as regular shorts, but let you splash around in the water as well. A swim skirt can do the same. Alternatively, swim pants can be quite stylish and comfortable both in and out of the water. Some even have pockets!
When it comes to cover-ups, there are so many different styles to choose from, and some are even quite glamorous looking. Sure you can just use a baggy T-shirt, but will you be comfortable wearing it? Chances are it won’t dry as quickly as a proper cover-up, and it will get wrinkly when stuffed into your beach bag. Plus, they aren’t as cooling as proper cover-ups are since some T-shirts aren’t made for blocking the sun’s rays. If you want a proper swimsuit cover up, you should know that there are lots to choose from, such as shirt dresses, tunics, and bohemian kaftans with delicate trims. One very versatile type of cover-up is a rash guard, which acts as a shirt but is made of a swimsuit type material that dries quickly. Some also have UPF 50, so they’re great options if you’re worried about protecting your skin from the sun. Plus, they take up minimal room in your beach bag, and they don’t wrinkle, so you can stuff them away when not in use without worrying about them keeping their shape or getting too wet.
When planning your beach day, be sure to take into account the types of activities you’ll be doing both in and out of the water, as well as the type of beach and terrain. This is important as it will help you decide not only what to wear, but what shoes to pack. For example, strappy sandals might be fun, but they won’t do you any favors on a rocky beach. If you plan on being quite active or are unsure of what will be waiting for you when you take your first step into the water, some water shoes will be your best friend. Look for a lightweight pair with mesh that lets water easily pass through. An adjustable bungee cord will ensure a secure fit. Rubber soles will protect your feet from sharp rocks, sticks, and shells as well. Plus, when you have a great pair of water shoes, you don’t need any other shoes to take you from the beach to the boardwalk.
Part of any great outfit is the accessories. For example, can you really go to the beach without a stylish pair of sunglasses protecting your eyes from the UV rays? Can you even fathom going to the beach without a cute, stylish, and functional beach bag? Don’t even think about it. In terms of sunglasses, make sure they fit right so they don’t slip off the tip of your nose when you’re being active. For your beach bag, it should be easy to carry and preferably waterproof.
You’d be amazed at how much more enjoyable your day at the beach can be if you pack lightly and wear beachwear that can easily take you from the beach to the boardwalk, and back.
