Solid FeatherLight? Large Backpack
Needed a new backpack for school. Older brother & sister were given ones from lands end that lasted clear through college, so hoping for the same wear and tear.

Perfect lightweight and sturdy too
I first bought this for my son for school in the royal blue with green but he only wanted black. Since I had our last name embroidered on it, I decided to keep it for myself! I bring my laptop home from work every night and the cushioned area at the back (against your back) has lots of room and lots of padding to keep it safe. Lots and lots of interior pockets to stash power cords, books, bills, my wallet, my keys -- everything in it's own place so I don't have to go searching to the bottom of a big bag for everything! Mesh with bungie on the outside is great for really fast access to something. Side mesh great for cell phone. I love it !!

Perfect size for my 7th grader
My son really likes this backpack. Two water bottle holders gets him through a long day of classes. Plenty of big and small packets for all of his books, pencils, etc. We can easily fit more stuff in here than he could actually carry I think!

2014 version -- Bizarre design
First let me say that my son used one of the original FeatherLight backpacks for the past 3 years, and it was sturdy, very useful and held up great. He would still use that one this year, but it's no longer big enough as he enters middle school. So I ordered the FeatherLight Large, expecting more of the same quality. I have no idea what the designers were thinking with this 2014 version, it is a truly bizarre backpack with little functionality for school. There are 3 zipper compartments. One of them could fit a binder but nothing else (I think this is intended for a laptop, which few kids are going to be schlepping to school). I found it very strange that this was a separate zippered compartment, instead of being part of the main compartment, which would have made the main compartment larger and more useful for different loads. The "main" compartment is surprisingly small, with a depth of less than 3 inches at the bottom. Then there is a "bottomless pit" front zippered pocket, which is very narrow and very deep -- I can just see this being the bermuda triangle of pencils, phones and other small things. There is NO thought in this design to helping kids organize small things: no little interior pockets for phone, pencils, etc. The final flaw for me is that the reinforced bottom is tiny and doesn't cover the functional bottom of the backpack: if it were stuffed, only part of the bottom that touches the ground is reinforced. So, sadly we have to return this and look elsewhere for a backpack. Too bad, my kid loved the print and the monogram!

Not as high quality as I would expect.
I purchased last year's version of this backpack for my son and in very short time, the pull tab (on the zipper) fell off, the bunny cord on the front came off and each of the side pockets developed holes in the mesh.

As the Mom of two boys, I can attest to the stamina of these backpacks. They are the reason that I do not need to buy a new backpack every year. My older son (a 5th grader) has had the same backpack since he started Kindergarten. The only reason we are buying a new one is for a larger size. Love them.

My 3rd grader - who is tough on EVERYTHING - has been using this bag for about 3 years. It is awesome!

Great for middle schoolers!
Many pockets, zippers and wide enough to hold the big binder plus gym clothes. I always buy LE backpacks and this one measures up.

Large, very light, backpack
I really like Lands Ends backpacks. One of ours is 11 years old and has gone through 3 kids and still looks new (except for some dirt, of course!)
This backpack is very large, and is VERY lightweight. Highly recommend.

Not as large as I thought...
This bag is very well made, very LE good quality, however it was not nearly as large as I thought it would be. We needed it to fit a 2" zippered binder, and we can't get this big binder in. In the demo video, there is a 2", 3 ring binder that fits in it, but not these bigger zippered guys which would be similar to a Trapper Keeper type of binder. I'll be returning it.
