In less than a year, the handle would get stuck in the 'up' position. You can put it down if you unzip the inner liner and press the handle button -- hardly convenient! The bag itself is rugged and worked great for my 3rd grader's many textbooks that she regularly brings home. Unfortunately, the handle problem means that we'll be returning it.

GET ANOTHER BACKPACK the handle would not collapse and the hook that hooked the straps on to the backpack broke! GET A DIFFRENT BACKPACKS. All of the other backpacks are VERY VERY high quality. I have gotten these all of my child's school years and they are very strong and sturdy but not this one this one sucked!!!!

Within a month of my 4th grader using it this last school year, the handle would not collapse. It was such a pain to transport with the handles constantly upright. The rest of the backpack was in good shape and she was so disappointed that we can't use it anymore, but it's too much of a pain. I had expected this (pricey) pack to last us two years, and we couldn't even get through one semester!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Kimmerama Defective Handles - 2 for 2
We bought two of these backpacks - one for each kid - and both handles failed on us halfway through the school year. One backpack handle was permanently stuck in the up position while the other backpack's handle wouldn't stay up! Returning both with fingers crossed I get some kind of a refund since these were pricy for only lasting a partial school year.

I bought the medium wheeled pack for my daughter for 1st grade. That bag didn't make it through the school year, with defective handle and the fabric completely frayed at every corner. Land's End gave me a partial refund towards a new model, which I happily took, but now one trimester into 3rd grade and the fabric is shot all over the bag, the net pockets (which we never even use) are ripped, and the handle not only was hard to retract into the bag but now completely broke--the top came off the metal support on one side, making it useless. Why they don't reinforce the fabric along the bottom and corners of the bag, I don't know. It was really cute with her monogram and all, but not doing LE backpacks again. I've seen cheap nylon backpacks that are lasting longer!

Rated 4 out of 5 by chrissylou Good backpack...great company
I have had the same issues with this backpack and the telescoping handle, it goes up fine, but difficult to lower. My daughter is in the second year of using it. These are otherwise very sturdy backpacks and usually I only have to buy a new backpack every 3-4 years for my kids. The reason I gave it such a high rating is that they will take back product and replace or refund at anytime! I just called and they are sending a new one out within a few days. I think the guarantee is worth it. Also, I can just take the old one back to Sears and they will return it for me. The next one I buy will probably not be a rolling one. But till then, I'm glad they have great customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Abby123 Handle will not collapse. Did not survive the whole school year.
Having the same issue as another reviwer with the handles. I thought my daughter was too rough until reading the other review. The handle will not collapse. This was half way through 3rd grade. It was a pain to trasport with the handles rasied. All other aspect of the backpack stayed intact. Will have to look else where for a rolling backpack.

I purchased this book bag 2 years in a row for my daughter..3rd and 4th grade years. The first bag I purchased for her 3rd grade year experienced a bit of wear and tear..the straps started to fray until I had to rig up pins and thread to keep it attached. Then, the handle broke on it so that we couldn't raise it up and down. I thought perhaps my daughter had been too hard on the bag, so I purchased another one for her 4th grade year...not as much wear and tear on this one but the handle broke on it again. I don't care what I did, I couldn't get the thing to collapse back into the bag. Finally, her dad stepped in and got it down but then we couldn't get it back up. She had too many books to carry on her back. After having the 2nd bag have the same issue with the handle, I will not be purchasing another bag from Lands End. I loved the style of the bag and the personalization but paying that much money for a backpack 2 years in a row and having it malfunction the same way...I can only conclude its not worth my money. It was pretty though...

Rated 5 out of 5 by Kateek Great school bag
Perfect size for my fourth grade daughter - holds her two inch binder plus accessories, light jacket, etc. wheels work great. Handle works smooth, she says even a kindergartner could figure it out!

Rated 4 out of 5 by SingSing Great bag but scoping handle hard to retract
The size of this backpack is perfect -- not too big nor too small. Having both the large and small compartments are perfect to keep things organized, and I like that there aren't a ton of tiny little pockets as things always tend to go missing in them or attract unneeded stuff. I also like that the straps can be tucked away when the bag is being wheeled, so that the straps don't drag on the ground. The back is padded a little so that when being carried on the back with the straps, you can't feel the handle through the bag sticking into your back.
My only issue is the scoping handle. It's very hard to get it to retract all the way as it is shown in the picture. I don't know if this is a defect on our backpack or is typical of the design, though we've had this same problem with other wheeled backpacks (non-Lands End) we've owned, so perhaps it is inherent in this type of bag.
As the other reviewer mentioned, the color is really nice in person.
