It is a cute book bag, sorta of pricey for the size. On the second day of use the Zipper pull unraveled. I know those don't last forever but it should have lasted beyond the second day!

by mom2fourunder6 Perfect size and great quality!
We actually own three of the ClassMate Small backpacks as I have three boys. Their ages are now 6, 8 and 9 (kindergarten-3rd grade) and these backpacsk have worked amazingly well for all three. And it fits all three really well. Granted, I have smaller than average children (9 yr old is 4ft1 and weighs 55lbs). It's really durable, a full year of use and none of them have any rips or tears. Quality is superb. Zippers function fully, snaps work perfectly, straps still in great condition. My kids typically have a folder or two, a planner, chapter book, a light jacket, and lunchbox in the bag every day and all fit well with room to spare for the random toy/stuffed animal. Best of all the design is neutral so it doesn't need to be replaced each year simply because they outgrew dinosaurs/latest movie character/etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Roughwithpantsson Good size for small 6 year old
I wanted a backpack for my son who is small for his age. We have another backpack that is slightly smaller. In anticipation with more homework expected and also the lunch bag in the backpack, I wanted another backpack that will not overwhelm my son. The backpack is the right size. Overall backpack seems standard. However, the bottom of the Solid ClassMate is much thinner than our other backpack. I am concern that it may not last the school year. As we have only had the backpack for 1 month, only time will tell.

I bought this backpack for my son 1 1/2 years ago, and we were very happy with it. It was durable and lasted through 1 1/2 years of school and daycare during the summer in between. Then the stitching started to pull away around the zipper in multiple locations. So I ordered a new one. The fabric of the new one seemed different - maybe a little thinner? Anyway, I felt confident in my purchase since we were happy with the original. Then, a week into use, I noticed that the zipper isn't operating properly - there are gaps where the zipper does not mesh completely (especially if pulled closed with the left zipper). The backpack has never been packed full or with heavy or bulky or hard things, so I can't see what could have caused this. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it lasts through the next 3 1/2 months until we can buy a new one for next school year.....and as much as I've always liked Lands' End backpacks and lunch bags, I think I may look elsewhere next year.

While I typically love everything I get from Lands End, I was so disappointed with this backpack. The quality doesn't seem to live up to the brand. Within 6 weeks of use, both zippers have broken so I feel it's been a waste of money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by pxy Not bad but not exactly great either
I really love the look and feel of LE backpacks. They are pretty durable; one of my sons is on his third year with the same backpack. He has a medium. It barely fits his stuff but he's grown a little attached. I needed another one for my kindergartener this year. Bought the small and medium to see which would work better. He's not too tall so wanted to make sure he doesn't end up lugging around something that went halfway to his knees. The height of the small was perfect. But the width is very narrow. I can just barely get a binder to fit, with nothing else in the bag. I don't understand why this is made this way. Add another inch and a half or two and it would be perfect. The medium is about an inch wider and about 2 inches taller than the small. It goes past his butt. Still just fits a binder but now it is very deep. I really don't understand this. It would make more sense to make it 2 inches wider and 1 inch taller since older kids use more binders which are wider. I recommend this if getting for items that aren't too wide like notebooks or folders but not for binders or anything else wider than a folder. I love the chest straps though which is the main reason I decided to buy this one instead of another from major competitor but I think I may have to look again at theirs since it's wider. Add some more width to these backpacks instead of height and I will definitely be back.

It a very durable backpack. And I know will be able to use it for sleepovers or week ends away.

I'm really disappointed in the quality of the backpacks now - they are NOT as good as they used to be! Overall the fabric feels much thinner, especially the bottom panel. The ones I bought 2-3 yrs ago are much sturdier, and last several years. I'm not sure they will hold up as the last ones did. This may be the last time I buy Land's End backpacks. :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by Bernadette99 Nice backpack!
I got this for my kindergartener and it's great. At first I ordered the large because I figured with as much money as it cost I should get a lot of use out of it, unfortunately the large was WAY too big for him (he's on the small size anyway), so I ended up getting this one and it's perfect. He can wear it comfortable AND is able to fit lunch and snack and school work in there. This should last him through 2nd grade I think. I also had it personalized, which he loves and I love that it's less likely to be mistakenly taken or lost.
