My son loved the design of this backpack, so we went ahead despite my preference for Pottery Barn Kids' backpacks. My observations after 3 weeks of school are that this is considerably thinner fabric, so I will but curious to see how long it lasts before there's a hole. My daughter's PBK backpack from K is still going strong in 3rd grade. Also, the water bottle holders are so shallow that they are basically useless. I have to put my son's water in his bag, so then it dribbles all over his papers. Not ideal! Finally, the handle at the top is strangely thin and just doesn't have a great, comfortable feel in the hand, which is unfortunate as this is the handle that I'd be likely to grab if the bag was super full and I wanted to give my son a hand with it (due to his small size). Anyway, I think I'd steer my son toward PBK backpacks in the future unless some of these design issues are addressed.

I got 2 of these for my boys. It is Lands' End. I was expecting so much more. You can see through the thin fabric it is made with. There is no way you can put a water bottle in the mesh on the sides (unless it is one of the plastic skinny ones). I would not recommend this. I really hope it lasts the year. I did purchase the lunch bags they seem to work well so far.

Rated 4 out of 5 by maitlandmom My son loves it. Shoulder straps padded nicely.
Would love it more if the side pockets were a little bit deeper. This is where the kids put their water bottles which are somewhat heavy, so they tend to fall out of the backpack. The side pockets need to be about 2 or 3" taller.

My son loves the bright colors of this backpack and the monogram and personalization we added. It seems to be made well, he is very rough on stuff so we'll see how it holds up compared to those we have purchased elsewhere in the past. I have high hopes for this one as several people have told me their kids backpacks from Land's End have lasted 4+ years!

Holds what it needs to hold.
Material in bottom of bag seems thin, you can see daylight through it. Wondering how long it will last.
Drink bottle falls out of holder, needs to be deeper.

This is for the large ClassMate backpack. Honestly, if it weren't for the great color-blue & camo-I wouldn't have anything good to say about this pack we paid over $70 for, with shipping and tax. It is very soft and crumpled, with a cheap feel. It stands weakly after a lot of help. The main compartment opens too wide and the back falls down. My 7th grader wrangled around with his big binder and planner book, the pack twisting and flipping around as he tried to zip it. Not good for a kid in a hurry, which he always is. The pack is very tall for a binder and books-there is 6" above the top of the binder. The water bottle, etc side pockets are only about 5 1/4" deep. We got an Eastsport brand from Walmart- it has a padded laptop compartment, a strong stiff body that stands easily, its shorter and has a Velcro front pocket (easy access) and its side pockets are 6 1/2" deep.

What a gorgeous backpack! Overall construction seems sturdy and has all the bells and whistle's you could ask for in the 1st grade.
One problem though. Why is the bottom of the backpack so thin? I can see light through it. I do not believe the bottom of this backpack will hold up to see the last bell ring in June.
My son(6) is actually pretty light in the abuse department. I opted for a better backpack this year rather than buying another superhero one from a box store. While his "cheap" backpack lasted all year, the bottom finally blew out on the last day of school with all the poking from folders and books. The bottom on this LE backpack seems to be even thinner than the store bought one.
I guess time will tell, but I have my suspicions.
