Boys' Waterproof Squall Parka
Second year in a row I bought this coat for my son. I love that it fits down over his backside to block the wind from going up his back. It's very warm and waterproof! He's a 20 Husky and it works perfect for him. I love it so much I went and bought the adult squalls for my older girls! Thanks LE.

Ok parka for young kids
We bought two squall parkas this year, one for our 6-year old son, to replace his old expedition jacket from 2 years ago, and one for our 2-year old daughter. So far the jackets have kept them warm, but old man winter has only been down to 10 degrees as of today. It will have to get much colder in order for me to compare the squall to the expedition (from 2 years ago), but the expedition kept my son warm throughout the entire winter. The only reason we didn't buy the expedition again was because of the new styling and reviews. My only complaints about this parka are: Velcro pockets are not a good idea. Their knit mittens constantly get stuck on them. The other problem, which is good and bad, is the extra fabric along the zipper by the neck area. Neither one of my kids can fully zip their jackets by themselves because the zipper gets "stuck" at the bottom of the fabric piece. That said, the fabric piece is nice so the zipper metal isn't rubbing on their chin. So we just help them for now.

I just purchased this coat for my almost 5 year old son in size Medium (5/6). He is currently outgrowing some of his 5 shirts in other brands. The fit on this jacket is a bit generous and I so excited because I believe we will get two winters out of it. There are several accommodations to adjust size. Wrist tightening velcro, hood velcro to make smaller, etc. We chose Chesapeake Blue which is a very pleasing color combination in real life. I've been concerned with Lands' End quality in recent years but this coat seems well built. Time will tell. My son particularly loves the fleece wrist/hand warmer. The hood does not detach.

great winter coat, warm and sturdy
This will be my 5th time buying a version of this coat- we have gotten two seasons out of it once or twice depending on my kids growth (my kids are tallish and lean to average build). They stay very warm even when we are outside snowshoeing, playing in the snow in below freezing weather. LE has maintained the quality of this item all the way along and I appreciate that. We consider this a necessity.

Nice but missing the details that I liked from years past
My son has worn these parkas for several years and has passed a couple of them down to his two younger brothers. I bought two more last week and was slightly disappointed when they arrived. They no longer have the reflective stripes on the back and the reflective piping around the bottom hem. I always thought this was a nice feature and am disappointed that it was removed. Additionally, the outer pockets now have velcro closures rather than snaps like before. My boys like to wear soft stretchy knit gloves and the velcro grabs and snags them. The interior pocket design has changed and is harder to get to as well.
It's still a good jacket. It fits well, it's warm enough and has a good length. We'll keep the new ones, but when they outgrow these we might shop around a bit more instead of automatically assuming that all the features I loved about the Land End parkas would still be there.

I only try it on this cold week. But I love it! It keeps my son warm with only his Tshirt! And we have lower than 0 C degrees temperature

sleeves are the only problem
coat looks nice and my son says it keeps him warm but we're both annoyed with the fact that the sleeves are so narrow he can JUST get his arms through with a thin long sleeve shirt. there is no way we'll be able to layer anything under this coat .

This is perfect for my average-sized 7 1/2 year old.
Since my kids get two years of wear out of these, the sale price is actually a great deal.

Durable and adjustable fit
My kids have always worn Lands End puffer coats but have complained that it restricts their movements when playing so I decided to take a chance on this style. This coat has what appears to be a very durable outside shell yet it is extremely light weight and not restricting. It is actually so light weight that I am a bit concerned if they will be warm when playing outside, say in February when it gets brutally cold. I will update this in Feb to let you know if it passed a NY winter. I noticed one reviewer stated that it does not have a drawstring waist and when I called lands end they confirmed no drawstring, however I am happy to let you know that this newer model that I just received has an adjustable drawstring waist. Without the drawstring waist I would have had to return this coat due to my son's physique. My son has big shoulders and stocky chest yet he tapers in at the waist which means that without a drawstring waist most coats that fit his shoulders are too big at the waist which allow for snow and wind to go up the coat and freeze my son. He wears a size 4/5 so I ordered him a size 5/6 and I can see him wearing this for the next two winter. So far my son has walked to school in the rain, played football, soccer and climbed fences (NYC concrete jungle) outside in this coat without complaining about restrictions or warmth. He also sat down outside and played pokemon for about 45 min with his friends (little movement) and still was not cold. This coat also has thumbholes which I find is very useful in keeping the wrist cuffs pulled down on a very active boy. I hope this review has helped someone. I am also attaching a picture of the drawstring waist.

Lost some of the good stuff
Yes, it's true, LE removed the awesome extra features that once made this a "5-boat" coat. Gone is the fabulous and handy mesh interior pocket, that kept my kids' hats and gloves safe. Gone are the helpful and safety-minded reflective strips and piping, that once, when we had them, I thought "hey, I'm glad those are there." And the snap on the exterior pocket has been replaced by Velcro, the Destroyer of All Things Knit. So, there is no way I could give this coat a 5, when the features have been reduced. I can only hope that the warmth quality of past years' models has not been compromised in 2014, because we will need all the warmth we can get to withstand another brutal winter. If it has, you can be sure I'll send it back! Everything else looks great. I am very happy that LE chose a nice bright green shade this year for the green&blue coat.
