Control panel made awkward fit for my thighs
These swim shorts definitely held in my tummy, but made my thighs poke out oddly. The actual size was fine, but the tummy control created weird lines on my thighs that were really unattractive. Shorts would be perfect for super thin thighs, but they worked against my curves.

These shorts look amazing, if you ignore the thigh bulge caused by the too-tight elastic
For background, I purchased these shorts last summer (2012). They were a perfect length, the waistband was great (didn't cut in). I am 5'8, 126 lbs, and many people consider me bordering on too slim. I give this information to give context to the rest of my comments. My point is: I'm probably on the slim side & still had trouble with the fit of these shorts.
The shorts are awesome for hip, upper thigh & bottom coverage, with one exception: the elasticized legs of the inner panty are far too tight. I originally ordered a 6, which was 1 size up from what my self-measurements indicated. Then, exchanged them for a size 8. This bordered on too wide in the outer shorts legs, but was workable. However, the inner panty seams continued to be too tight. I decided to grin and bare it, because everything can't be perfect and I needed a pair of swimshorts pronto. I wore them camping & while they looked great (if you ignored the hip bulge), once they got wet & i sat around on the beach, the elastic was starting to really dig in quite painfully.
I just checked out the reviews for 2013, hoping Lands End had updated the fit to accommodate all the feedback about the unattractive hip bulge that the inner panty causes. If they had, I would have ordered another pair. I'm now considering whether to take them to a seamstress & ask whether she can take out the elastic & replace it with something a little looser & somehow let out any excess fabric to allow for that.

Just what I was looking for!
I really like Lands End swim skirts and I wanted something different without going to a regular swim bottom. I like the way LE swim skirts and shorts hide just enough of my upper thighs and I can just throw a shirt on and look "mostly dressed" for a walk down the beach or a poolside lunch. These shorts are very comfortable and just the right length.

High quality and comfortable swim shorts
These were the first swim shorts I had tried. So when ordering I ignored my standard practice of wearing one size larger in swimsuits and ordered my usual size of 4. I found them a bit constricting, so exchanged them for a size 6 and loved the fit. If you normally go up a size on swimsuits, I recommend you do so on these shorts. I wore these on vacation to Costa Rica last month and could not have been happier with them. I felt comfortable lying on the beach, swimming in the ocean and also in a pool. They never ride up, dry fast, keep their shape and give me the coverage I like to appear in public at my age in a swimsuit. You won't regret purchasing these swim shorts.

I thought I was ordering the same item in one size smaller, but it lacks the quality.
I just received a swimsuit bottom similar to what I had before when I was a size larger. I used the same item code number, etc, just ordered one size smaller. The fabric was not even the same type fabric; it did not have as much give as the previous bottom and lacked the all around quality of the item made before. I have to agree with the other reviewers that complained about the inner lining panty being smaller than the garment. I am very disappointed that LE has not been vigilant about these quality issues.
I will have to keep looking for a shorts type bottom that fits my shape.

Good fit; nice quality
I ordered a 10 tall and they fit me very well and are true to size. The quality is good and they're flattering. A good length for my 6' tall, 143 lb. body. First time I've gotten shorts style bottoms, and I was worried they'd be sort of old ladyish, but I'm pleased with the way they look.

Not for Me
I had high hopes for these shorts but the attached panty is really unflattering for me. The outer shorts are good, but the panty is very snug around the leg openings and the result was a yucky/weird bulge under the shorts. I do think that these would work for a thin person, or at least someone with thin upper thighs, but that's not me! A larger size wouldn't work as the rise was already a little low for me in this pair. Off to try a different bottom...

Great tummy control, weird panty fit
Got the blue ones last summer, and liked them a lot - comfy, good fit, not unflattering. So just got the black and am so disappointed in the way they look on. The leg opening of the panty is tight and creates the appearance of a bulge in the front thigh. Odd-looking.
At first I thought about cutting the elastic, or removing the panty, but this is a lot of money to risk wasting.
Too bad, because I really like the tummy control part.
Back they go.

Good fit but...
I have been wearing these shorts to swim in for the last 2 weeks and like a lot of things about them. The leg openings on the lining fit me fine, unlike many reviewers, and they are comfy and pretty practical.
My main complaint is that the top of the waistband hits me right where that little roll of fat sits, right above my hips. (I guess that would be my waist) So even though these are the right size (12) they draw attention to something I'd rather hide. And even when I wear them with the top over them you still see it.
This is the second time I've gone with a tankini and don't understand why LE is doing them much more than one-piece suits these days. A good one-piece (I still wear an LE one from about 5 years ago) smoothes out your lumps and bumps instead of accentuating them. My other slight complaint about these shorts (and the Beach Living top I bought to match) is that they stay wet forever so even when I sit on my towel to drive home the seat gets wet.

Women's Beach Living Swim Shorts with Tummy Control
I have never before been this satisfied with a swim suit. As soon as they have other colors and patterns I will be purchasing more. The fit was perfect and the fabric holds up great when I'm relaxing in the hot tub. Modesty is important and I enjoy being able to move without worry of exposure. No more tugging and adjusting. Thank you designers!!! Make more just like it in other colors - I will buy black again anyway.
Above I had to choose a fit option and perfect is not listed. I am a size 10/12 and ordered a size 12. Perfect.
