These plates were inspired by artifacts of the whaling sailor’s art, schrimshaw, in which elaborate carvings were made on whale ivory. New York designer Thomas Paul created the prints — on melamine, the popular, lightweight and shatterproof resin. It makes the plates perfect for casual outdoor dining — easy to carry, trouble free if it takes a tumble. (Many toddler plates are melamine, so you may have already used it. And even if not, know it has to be tough.) Imported.
