BACKPACKS HAVE HELD UP THROUGH 2 YEARS OF USE BY TWIN BOYS! Now THAT is a good backpack!!
Let me start by saying that we originally purchased these backpacks in a green camouflage print two years ago, we do not own the print I am reviewing about. I would love to see that print available again. It was a subdued print, perfect to grow with my boys over the years. The only difference was that the lunch pack used to have a clip that dangled down from the top of the backpack, which makes the lunch pack swing around a bit uncomfortably for the children. It looks like Land's End has corrected that with a better-functioning lunch pack attachment on the ClassMate. These backpacks are AMAZING. Hands-down the BEST packs I have ever purchased!!! My twin boys have used (or should I say abused...) these packs through TWO grades and they look nearly brand-new. The bottoms are finally showing a tiny bit of pilling - but that is the only sign of wear!! I have hand-washed them, completely submerged in a bath of water, washed the lunch packs in the top rack of the dishwasher and, most recently, washed backpacks and lunch packs in the gentle cycle of my washing machine. I always hang the packs to dry. Each time they come out looking AMAZING with every ounce of dirt washed away! I cannot sing enough praises for the ClassMate backpacks and coordinating lunch packs. I purchased lunch packs for myself and my daughter, and will absolutely purchase them again. We monogramed each item, especially because my boys wanted the same print, and it was well worth the extra money. Now we can tell the packs apart at a glance, and it identifies them in school (in case they ever misplace them and they land in the dreaded black hole of "lost and found"). Speaking of identifying them, there are little fabric patches inside the packs where you can write your child's name in Sharpie. That is a VERY nice feature! We only monogramed initials on the outside because we think it is unsafe to publish our child's full name to any passersby. It is wonderful to be able to write their full name inside without trying to locate some random tag to write on. As for size, I read reviews in the past that said these packs are not roomy enough for the upper grade levels. I disagree - first of all, many schools are beginning to keep school books at school and only require the children to transport their folders, binders and agendas. We can fit SO MUCH in these packs, but they are still slim and easy for the children to manage. My boys carry a 1 1/2" binder, two-pocket folder, and library books daily. We also regularly send in extras, like donated Kleenex boxes or (recently) a full-sized board game for a party! All of this can fit in the pack. I feel comfortable buying the medium size for my tiny girl entering kindergarten because I know it won't weigh her down but will carry all of her items. I will eventually purchase the large size for my twins as they move up to middle school. I will be able to use their old packs for summer camp, swimming outings, the beach - you name it! Thanks for reading this long review, I hope it benefits someone out there!

Good quality backpack for kindergarten
I bought this for my daughter when she started kindergarten. She loves it.
It's well made and has enough pockets to fit everything she needs.
A good deal at the sale price.

great size
makes a great first backpack for the earliest grades. Large enough to bring home the refrigerator art, but small enough for the smaller students to handle.

These backpacks ROCK!
I don't usually write reviews on products, but I just had to today. My children's Land's End backpacks and lunch bags have been through over 3 years of grueling elementary school use and are still in excellent shape. Not a rip, tear, or loose thread anywhere. However, as we are prepping for the start of school this year, I decided that maybe they needed a little TLC because they had some serious stains, dirt, and other elementary school related gunk on them. I know that the directions say "spot clean" but I thought I'd give it a go and toss them right in the washing machine. Why not, right? So in they go and with bated breath I await to find a tangle mess of zippers, thread, mesh, and possibly a melted eraser. But, VOILA!, they came out of the washer looking absolutely 100% like new! I love these things! I've always known Land's End to have excellent quality and this was no exception. I recommend these to anyone looking for a backpack that will last through several years of school. And they are darn cute too.
