Madras cloth is named for the city where it was first woven: Madras (now called Chennai), India. The breezy weave became famous for its comfort in the intense heat of India — so imagine how good it'll feel in your neck of the woods. For our shirt, we keep the single-ply yarns of the original but use combed and ringspun yarns for increased silkiness and durability. We stick with plaids (which the Indian weavers adopted from the British) but use rich, deep colors. (In another improvement, ours are colorfast.) Finally we garment wash the shirt to a broken-in softness that's a real departure from the dry, less-than-gentle feel of the first madras. Give the shirt a try, and enjoy hot weather. 100% cotton.
