To borrow from the movies, Square Rigger® Attaches are remakes, not re-releases.

The current bags share lots of similarities with the original, from basic design to rugged cotton canvas. But these bags don't duplicate ones from 20 or 30 years ago – as you can tell from some comments below. There are changes – many stylistic, to bring these into an age ruled by sleek wheeled luggage. For example, the old webbing seemed bulky; now we use a narrower, thinner, more flexible strap. The canvas is woven differently; made lighter, it allows us to use a double layer of fabric that is actually two to three times more durable than the earlier fabric while saving weight. The basic bag had no leather (that was only on the step-up versions) whereas all new bags have leather trim. And a brass zipper seemed a better complement to the 100% cotton canvas than a plastic one.

Other changes also add value. The new bags have one more exterior and one more interior pocket. They hold more: 775 cu. inches, compared to 700. Webbing is sewn with gaps for an umbrella on one side and a light jacket on the other. And even after these updates, the new bag weighs just five ounces more than the old one.
