And in an early catalog we offered a canvas tote for “beach, boat and beyond.” Customers liked its durability; we even got letters from sailors who, forced to improvise, used theirs as a tow line or a sea anchor. A force that took out a rudder, couldn’t take out our Tote.
Bert R. of Virginia wrote a letter to tell us the harrowing story: The Windrift was returning from a regatta as a treacherous storm set in with high winds and breaking waves when the crew heard the loud “crack!” The rudder had snapped (off!) just above the water line. To make matters worse, they had just entered the mile-plus long inlet famous for ripping tidal currents and hazardous sand bars. They had no steerage and no way to control their vessel – and then he saw our Canvas Tote on the deck. He attached it to a rope and threw it off the back of the boat. The water filled tote saved the day (and the boat)!
