Interviewing Tips
Interviews don't have to be stressful experiences if you take
the time to prepare in advance and stay focused during the interview
itself. Here are some tips that may help you the next time you interview
- whether it's with Lands' End or some other company.
Preparing for the "main event"
|
- Know the company and have a good understanding about the
position you are interviewing for. Most companies have Web
sites where you can learn a lot about them, and you can
also ask for a detailed job description from the recruiter
prior to the interview.
- Practice answering some of the most commonly asked interview
questions. You can do this either alone or with a trusted
friend - ask them to give you feedback on how well you did.
- Know your resume and be prepared to expand on it. Give
specific information on your contributions to a project,
on a job, etc.
- Know your goals - both short-term and long-term. Be prepared
to explain how you plan to achieve them.
- If you're not familiar with the dress code of the company,
it's best to err on the more conservative side. You can
also call the recruiter and ask their opinion about appropriate
interview attire.
- Confirm directions to the interview site ahead of time.
- Arrive early - but not too early - for the interview.
About 15 minutes is sufficient.

During the interview
|
- Every interviewer has his or her own style. Try to adapt
to it.
- Show your enthusiasm for the job.
- Be confident and self-assured - but not arrogant.
- Smile!
- Listen carefully. If a question is not clear, ask the
interviewer to please repeat it or to clarify.
- Use specific examples.
- If you don't know the answer, say that you don't know
the answer. It's much better than trying to lie and getting
caught.
- Don't be critical of past employers. Find positive experiences
to discuss.
- Always end on a positive note.
- Always keep conversation on a professional level - even
while you're walking from one interview to the next.
- Always be courteous to everyone you meet at the company.
This not only goes for those with whom you are interviewing,
but also with others you meet along the way, such as the
receptionist, housekeeping, etc.
|
After the interview
|
- Send a thank-you note immediately after the interview.
- Within the note, restate your interest in the position
and the company.
