Interviewing Tips

Frequently Asked Questions
Employment
I sent my resume in a couple of days ago. How long will it take before I'll be contacted about an interview?
You will receive an acknowledgment that your resume has been received. If your skills and interests are a match for any of our current openings, you will be contacted to set up an interview. If there isn't a match, your resume will be kept on file. Should a position open up that is a match, we will contact you personally.

How do I know that the position I find online hasn't already been filled?
We make every effort to ensure that job postings are removed as soon as positions are filled.

Can I submit a resume for more than one job?
If you see two or more position postings that interest you, and have the necessary requirements, you need to submit only one cover letter and resume. However, please include each position's job code number within your cover letter and resume.

Is there opportunity for advancement?
Absolutely! We value and support the career development of all our employees. We have an internal placement program that assists employees in realizing and managing their career growth and development. This encompasses all areas of the company. Whenever possible, we fill job openings with qualified internal candidates.

Does Lands' End pay for relocation?
Yes, for qualifying positions. We realize that starting a new job is stressful enough, but doing it in a new city can sometimes be overwhelming! Your Recruitment and Development Specialist from Employee Services will work with you to make sure this transition period goes smoothly.

Can I apply for a position in your corporate office if I'm not from the United States?
Yes. If you're not a U.S. citizen, in order to be hired you will need to provide documentation that proves you can legally work in the United States.

Can I apply for a position in one of your international offices?
Our international locations do their own hiring. Any open positions are advertised locally - meaning, within that country.

Do you have any part-time jobs available?
Yes. We have a number of opportunities in our sales/service and operations areas, along with many other opportunities in our stores.

Internships
Does Lands' End offer internships?
Lands' End offers many internship opportunities for college students entering into their final year of study.

I gave my resume to a Lands' End representative at a career fair and so far, nobody has called me back. What's going on?
At this time, we may be reviewing your resume against current internship openings. If we see a match, we will contact you to arrange an interview. If not, we will keep it on file, and should an internship become available that matches your skills and abilities, we will contact you personally.

Who is eligible to participate in the internship program?
Our internship program is designed for either two-year or four-year college or university students. Students enrolled in a four-year university must be at least Junior status students or Seniors with a minimum of one semester remaining upon completion of an internship. Students enrolled in a two-year college must be enrolled in their core concentration classes and have one or two semesters remaining before graduation.

Our internship program is open to graduating students who need an internship in order to graduate. If you do not, then most likely you will be seeking full-time employment with us.

When are internships offered?
Most take place during the summer. However, we do offer some internships during the spring and fall semesters. These include our Apparel Design, Web Design, Health & Fitness, and Operations internships, to name a few. To learn more about these and other internships, visit our internship opportunities page.

When should I apply for an internship?
If you are applying for a spring internship, please have your resume submitted by early November. If you are applying for a summer internship, please have your resume submitted by mid-January. For fall internships, please have resumes to us by mid-April, so we are able to reach you at school before you leave for the summer.

When will hiring decisions be made?
All applicants for spring internships will receive a response by the end of December. All applicants for summer internships will receive a response by early April. And all applicants for fall internships will receive a response by the end of June.

I'm interested in interning with Lands' End, but I don't live near any of your locations. Do you help students find places to live during their internships?
Yes! We have students interning with us from all over the United States, and we realize that many of them have never been to Wisconsin, let alone Dodgeville. Our Employee Services group will work with all students to make sure they secure housing for the summer.

Our interns usually choose to either rent in Dodgeville or find places in Madison, which is roughly 45 minutes away. Madison is a "university town," so there are lots of housing options available during the summer. If interns need to relocate from a distance of greater than 50 miles, Lands' End will reimburse them for such travel expenses as mileage, U-Haul rental one way.

I noticed that Lands' End isn't visiting my school. Will I still be able to apply for an internship?
Certainly! Although we'd love to visit many more schools, we don't have the resources. This is why we have so much internship information available on this site. We want to let all students know that Lands' End is a great place to start your career.

Do you offer internships to international students?
Yes. We consider all students who are authorized to work on a full-time basis in the United States and we also consider international students who have practical training eligibility (J-1 visa). However, at this time we cannot sponsor students.

I notice you have business operations in the UK, Japan and Germany. Do you offer internships at any of those locations?
Unfortunately, we do not.

Interview process
What is the interview process like?
You may be contacted to participate first in a telephone interview. Don't worry, we won't interview you on the spot. Instead, we'll schedule a time that is convenient for you. After that, you may be asked to come in to interview (or this may happen without doing a phone interview first).

When you visit us for your interview, you can anticipate meeting with several people - the hiring manager, employees within the area/division of the open position, and an Employee Services representative. (If you're interviewing at one of our stores, you'll meet with the Store Manager and/or Assistant Manager.) You will also have an opportunity to tour our facility. After your first visit, you may be called back for an additional visit. And of course, references will be contacted before we extend any offer of employment.

What should I wear to my interview?
Believe us when we say you don't need to come in a suit and tie - unless you prefer to. Lands' End is an authority on business casual attire. If you're looking for suggestions on what to wear to make that lasting impression, be sure to visit landsend.com.

Company
How can I get information about Lands' End for a school project?
First, we recommend checking out Fun Facts and the Lands' End Web site, as both are great sources of information about Lands' End.

Information about specific financial or strategic direction (i.e., sales on specific products, future direction of the Internet business) is considered proprietary and is something we do not release.

Is Lands' End involved with community service?
We have a corporate giving committee made up of employees who represent various disciplines within the company, different communities and their local charitable causes. This approach makes sense for us because these people know firsthand what's best for Lands' End and the communities around us.

The causes we focus on are education, community development, environment, and health and human services. We fulfill needs within these areas not only by monetary donations, but also by manpower hours.

I work at a college/university and am interested in obtaining information for my students. How would I do this?
We are always interested in speaking with professors, instructors, career service professionals and students about our company. We can do several of the following:
  • Organize a field trip to any of our facilities.
  • Speak to an on-campus class or student organization.
  • Host a video conference lecture.
  • Connect you with individuals in the company who work in the same field that you instruct in.
  • Or a variety of other things...just ask!
I've noticed that you have outlet stores. How can I request to have one in my city?
At this time we are able to open stores only in the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and New York, due to the taxation of mail order companies. In short, because we have a physical presence in those states, our catalog customers already pay sales tax on both their catalog purchases and store purchases. If we were to open a store in any other state, we would then subject our catalog customers in that state to pay sales tax on all their purchases. So we have decided to concentrate our outlets in the states where we are currently collecting sales tax.

I am interested in opening a Lands' End store or purchasing the operating rights to a Lands' End store. Is this possible?
At this time, all of our merchandise is sold either through our catalogs or our outlet stores. We currently do not have any plans to allow others to market our products or name. It is our belief that it is in the best interest of our company and our customers to control our products from development through the sales process.
