Dressing Solutions 101: Any
ideas on how to dress a stubborn toddler?
It's hard to remember a time
when we didn't know how to get dressed, but learning where to put your
head, arms and legs takes some time. Many kids will want to start dressing
themselves around age 2, but most will need help until they're at least
3. Here are some tips to help avoid confrontation, encourage independence,
and set limits:
- Have your toddler "help"
you in the beginning by saying things like, "Let's put your hands up
real high so Mommy can get your shirt on!"
- Tantrums are common as
your toddler is just beginning to assert himself. Don't lose hope. Experts
recommend giving them choices about how to get dressed, not whether
to get dressed. For example, saying, "It's time to go now; we have to
leave. Would you like to dress yourself this morning or would you like
me to help you get dressed?" If your child still is not able to get
dressed, dress him yourself and say, "Maybe next time you'll be able
to do this all by yourself!"
- Have fun. Play peekaboo.
When dressing your young child, say, "Where's your hand? Oh there it
is! It just came out of your sleeve!"
- Give your child a choice
of 2 or 3 different outfits. She'll be more eager to get dressed if
she has a say in what she wears.
- Communicate with your kids
and be sensitive to what they want. If it's convenient (and possible),
get duplicates of their most favorite sweatpants or T-shirt. That way
one will always be clean - and it smoothes logistical problems ahead
of time!
