When you think of the word "comfort," you may also think of "comfort food." In the realm of fabric, we'd say the equivalent is probably flannel, a favorite fabric, whose historical origins we wrote about in our October 1989 catalog.

A Very Brief History of Flannel

The mines were a cool 55 degrees Fahrenheit, so the Welsh invented flannel.

Many decades ago, wives and mothers of Welsh colliers discovered a way to help keep their husbands and sons warmer deep down in the coal mines. They wove pure cotton yarns into a simple yet substantial twill fabric. Napped the cloth on one or both sides in imitation of wool flannel. Then proudly crafted this soft cloth into warm, durable shirts that were treasured by their owners.

It is in this tradition that we offer our Flannel Shirt, typically around September.
